For character and storytelling, I was drawing a ton of influence from Rui Tenreiro, specifically from his book The Celebration. I’m sure Erin had lots of ref’s for background and art design, but I bet Jon Klassen is one she was looking at a ton.

thanks! actually it was all over the place. we wanted to economize and do low frames/second, but we had tons of camera moves on 1’s. i feel like animation on 2’s and 3’s jitters really bad on camera moves, so we went all the way and did stuff anywhere between 2’s and 10’s depending on what the scene required, but we tried to be sparing to keep that storybook feel where we could get away with it. most scenes with a camera move were 8’s or 10’s.

Thanks! Yeah the snow was 2-part. First was Trapcode Particulate in After Effects with a posterize layer over it to be at 12fps, which was the snow particles. That was the major hard part. Then I hand animated the wind gusts in photoshop with a big smeary white brush to make large streaks across the screen. That actually only took a couple tries because it’s supposed to look really turbulent. I probably animated only about 10 seconds that was looped over most of the short. Hope that helps!

I feel like stories kind-of write themselves, and this one just got way too big for LNWC, so we had to shelve it and start from scratch a month from the deadline (which also got pushed back). I think the same happened to other people in LNWC too. Such is making a film I guess…

Late Night Work Club’s Ghost Stories will premiere online on September 3rd at midnight eastern standard time. It will stream in its entirety on Vimeo, for free. No matter where you are, if you’ve got a connection you can watch it with everyone else.
In addition, over at Gumroad, we’ll be offering HD download packs optimized for your desktop and tablet viewing pleasure, along with some special digital goodies for $10. We will also be selling a limited edition of 100 Uncanny Mystery Packs for $30 + shipping. They will include a zine with comics and cool stuff, along with pins, mini-prints and stickers.
